Lexus Pedal Kits
What are the Three Pedals in a Car?
The accelerator/throttle (gas pedal), the brake (brake pedal), and the clutch (clutch pedal). What they do, you're already familiar with. Throttles speed a vehicle up when pressed (the longer and further, the faster the engine revs, the faster the vehicle goes). Brakes slow a vehicle down when pressed, the same logic applying. Clutches allow changing gears when accelerating or braking. Many sports cars and other performance vehicles with manual transmissions have them; they temporarily disengage the engine and transmission and smooth out the gearshift process.
Can I Modify a Car's Pedals?
With the right pedal kit, you can upgrade everything --the pedals themselves, their covers, their linkages, usually even their pedal position sensors. We carry it all here at Longo Lexus; our pedals and their parts are OEM-quality, guaranteed to fit your model, warranty-backed for peace of mind, and best of all, inexpensive, with most options priced well below MSRP.
There are several routes you can take. For one, you can put non-skid rubber covers on your old, worn pedals. Secondly, you can swap, say, an automatic transmission for a manual; for that, you'll need a pedal conversion kit with a linkage. Third, you can get your ride the looks from passengers that it deserves with a custom or billet pedal; they come in finishes and textures galore -- for instance, aluminum -- which can be a great look for a Lexus sports car.
What Does a Pedal Position Sensor Do?
In vehicles with an Electronic Throttle Control (ETC), it detects just what it says, for the throttle/accelerator, sending that info to, in the case of your Lexus, the onboard computer -- namely, to the engine control module (ECM). Put simply, it tells the engine you're accelerating. You can't, however, if the sensor fails.
What Happens When a Pedal Position Sensor Goes Bad?
Your engine idling speed will increase, your vehicle won't speed up when you hit the gas, it'll activate a "limp mode"(itll lose power; that's its way of protecting itself and the transmission from failure), and your Check Engine light will turn on.
There're a few causes for this. One's damaged sensor cables or connections. Another's a missing voltage and ground supply. Yet another's faulty electronics in the sensor. To figure out what's happening, plug in a code reader and figure out what code's showing up, inspect the sensor for mechanical damage, check its connections, and finally, evaluate sensor condition with an oscilloscope and multimeter. If needed, replace the sensor ASAP. We've got them here, and for less.
